Russ Duncan Memorial Scholarship


Russ Duncan was a remarkable individual who displayed extraordinary strength and kindness. Despite facing his own challenges, he consistently placed the needs of others before his own. He was a loving husband and father to three beautiful children, and his devotion to them was an inspiration to all. Throughout a courageous battle against a rare form of thyroid cancer that spanned seven years, Russ exemplified unwavering resilience, inspiring all who knew him. On January 24, 2022, Russ’ fight ended.

The Russ Duncan Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Russ Duncan. The purpose of this scholarship is to extend a helping hand to families affected by cancer by offering assistance and encouragement to individuals pursuing their educational goals despite the hardships their families have faced. It is our hope that the legacy and compassionate spirit of Russ Duncan lives on through this scholarship.


Fast Facts:

• First Scholarship was awarded in the Spring of 2024
• College scholarship awarded annually to a high school senior from the upper 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle who have a parent who has been or is afflicted with cancer
• HCHF Grants Committee serves as the selection committee
• Deadline of March 20, 2025

Award Description:

• $10,000 scholarship for college attendance, paid in four consecutive annual payments of $2500 per year.
• Yearly award contingent on college student maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better

3. Complete the Online Scholarship Application

  • Please follow all instructions on the application. If, for any reason, you have trouble downloading or uploading a document – please call our office for instructions.
  • Applications that are incomplete on due date may not be considered.

4. HCHF will review your application

  • Your grant application will be reviewed by our Scholarship Committee and the Harrington Cancer and Health Foundation’s board of directors.

5. Final Scholarship Decisions Are Made

  • We may contact you by phone or email should you be awarded this scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements listed below

  • Have a parent/guardian who has battled cancer or is currently fighting cancer
  • Graduating from a high school in the upper 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Planning to attend an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college or junior college

Deadline: March 20, 2025

You will be asked to submit the following:
• High School transcript
• Proof of enrollment at an accredited two-year or four-year university, community college, or junior college. This may be an official letter verifying your enrollment. If you are still awaiting acceptance, you may still apply. Proof of enrollment will be required before you may receive a check.
•One letter of recommendation detailing why you should receive the scholarship.
